Coulter House, It's name and origin...
Located at the junction of the old Hot Sulphur Springs and Grand Lake trails, Coulter House was built in 1872 (four years prior to the Battle of the Little Big Horn, site of Custer's Last Stand) and soon named after Judge Coulter from Georgetown. Originally utilized as a residence/boarding house, it served as one of the few improved stagecoach stops between Denver and Craig. Fresh teams of horses were kept here and many a teamster and his passengers were fed and sheltered while the 'used-up' teams of horses were 'switched-out' with a fresh team before making the long, bumpy journey to the next stop. In 1877 it housed the first US Post Office in Grand County up until 1905, at which time the Post Office was moved to the new town of Granby. The house was home to several different renters and ranch hands until 1955, when my parents bought Coulter House and the ranch it sits upon. The house was updated with an addition for a kitchen and bathroom as all there was then were 2 out houses. We lived in the house for a short time until the main ranch house was built in 1962. During the next 19 years Coulter house was home again to ranch hands and renters until 1982, when my husband Jeff and I moved in. We lived and raised our two children there until 1995, at which time we moved out of Coulter House into a new home we built, which is also located on the ranch. We are a family owned and operated business with 36 years of combined jewelry designing experience. All of our handmade pieces are one of a kind, made here in Colorado by myself and my daughter Janzy. By visiting gem and jewelry shows several times a year, we are able to purchase the latest styles in beads and gems from around the world, enabling us to make unique and affordable pieces.
